human history
  • Other Name

    Waist ornament (English)

  • Description

Te katau te nana. Waist ornament of coconut shell discs. This is made up of three components; te kora (sennit cord), te nana (coconut shell discs) and te nouo (small conus shell). It is a single-stranded piece that has been disjointed, measuring straightaway at 883mm. Te kora is constructed using the two-ply technique. These are used to thread te nouo and te nana, where each pieces are perforated at the centre.

Te nouo and te nana have been drilled or cut from a larger piece. These are thin in depth and small in circumference. Te nana are of various shades, including discolorations, of its natural, dark brown colour. The two pieces of te nouo are strung on together in the midst of te nana. Off-white in colour with hint of pink spots, te nouo is a unique feature to this ornamental piece.
