'Ato tui

human history
  • Other Name

    Coiled basket (English)

  • Description

'Ato tui. Coiled basket. This is handwoven 'ato. It has been woven to form a circular bowl-like shape with short sides and a wide diameter. Tuāniu (midribs) form the skeleton of the 'ato. Lau fala (soft pandanus) and fau (lace bark) has been used to tui kolose (crochet/coil) over the tuāniu forming the material of the 'ato. The centre shows where the maker has began and continued to form the 'ato.

Two different coloured dyed fau define borders across the sides of the 'ato tui. They have been dyed a dark red and almost green colour. Triangular patterns can be seen through where the maker has chosen to tui kolose the tuāniu - for example this is more evident along the fau covered rim area.
