    Adze, Hafted (English)

  • Description

    Toki. Hafted adze. Toki (adze - trapezoidal in cross section) of toka kerekere (basalt stone) lashed with very fine braided puru akari (coconut sennit) in an iri taki toru (3-ply braid) technique to a carved wooden haft. Haft carved in a long, solid cylindrical shape. Carved surface decoration applied to the entirety of the wooden haft consisting the same repeated motif. Haft and lashing is stained dark brown in colour. Toki is highly polished and dark in colour.

    Large loss at the lower end of the haft revealing the natural colour of the wood.
