Reverend Archie Wharton Ellesmere Silvester of Auckland served as a Methodist Missionary on Vella La Vella during WW2. During 1943 he helped hide 165 survivors from the USS Helena for 8 days as arrangements were made for their rescue. On 12 January 1946 President Harry Truman awarded him the US Order of Merit for "extraordinary fidelity and exceptionally meritorious conduct." [see further details on person file]
