The impact of synthetic fabrics like crimplene became significant in the 1970s as it greatly increased the range of patterns and colours available to designers. By the 1970s the cocktail hour had been extended into more casual barbeque, pool and garden parties to which a dress like this one, worn by noted Auckland interior designer, and would have been seen as modern and vivacious.
