    belt that belonged to Thomas Viret Shepherd, 109th Regiment Bombay Infantry.

    "Thomas Viret Shepherd (1845-1916) was born at Auckland, the son of Alexander Shepherd (Colonial Treasurer 1842-1856), educated privately and joined the army as ensign nin the 109th Regiment (1861). He served at home [Britain] and in India til 1863, when he retired with the rank of major and settled in Auckland. There he was adjutant and commandant of the militia district (1883-90) rising to the rank of Colonel. Shepherd was sergeant-at-arms of the House of Representatives (1902-15) and died on 19 Dec. 1916. He married Grace, daughter of Major-general G Shakespear, R.A." From Who's Who in New Zealand, 1908.
