    Phonograph record of historic message from Sir George Grey

    Phonogram record (wax cylinder) in container; rectangular wooden box put together tongue and groove style; brass hinges and brass lock mechanism; inside is a cardboard cylinder which contains the phonogram; top of box inscribed "Phonogram Sir George Grey"

    markings: box top: "PHONOGRAM / SIR G. GREY"

    cylinder top: "Message from Sir G. Grey to the citizens of Auckland; 10 revs per 5 secs; No. of Machine 4233; Reproduce 2 revs per sec.

    The brown wax cylinder contained in the cardboard tube was examined circa 1992-1993 and found to be broken. It was repaired in 1998-1999 but it was not possible to recover any legible recording.
