    Major Francis Albert Aldridge

    Francis Albert Aldridge DSO (1907-1976)

    Military Service:

    pre-war: Territorials

    WW2: 14th Light Anti-aircraft Regiment in Africa & Italy

    Awards: DSO

    Official Citation for DSO:

"Major Aldridge joined the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force on the 29th August, 1940, with the 14th New Zealand Anti-aircraft Regiment, and sailed as officer-in-charge of the 5th Artillery Reinforcements.

"As Battery Captain of the 43rd Battery, which was under command of the 6th Brigade, he served throughout the Second Libyan Campaign in the gallant actions of Sidi Rezegh and Bel Hamed. Later Major Aldridge was appointed Battery Commander of the 42nd Battery and filled this position with great distinction until the end of the Tunisian Campaign in April, 1942, his Battery being credited with over a dozen planes shot down.

"Again, in the Alamein offensive and the actions at Tripolitania and Tunisia, Major Aldridge's Battery gained further successes in the destruction of enemy planes and displayed efficiency and a high morale which reflected his own unassuming yet cheerful efficiency.

"Major Aldridge also served with distinction in the Italian Campaign. In action, he was always cool and assiduous to duty."
