    CMG Citation

    Lieut. Colonel (Temp. Brigadier-General) Wellington Regiment.

    LG 3 June 1918, p6454, Rec No 1940

    “This officer has commanded a Brigade, which he had previously trained, since the operations at Messines with great success, notably at the taking of Gravenstafel Ridge on the 4th October 1917. He has shown great ability and merit and by his own energy and example brought an entirely new and untried Brigade to a high standard of efficiency and discipline."

    Military service (summary): HE Hart

    Anglo-Boer War: Herbert E Hart enlisted in the 9th NZMR

    WW1: Appointed 2nd in command of the Wellington Battalion which left New Zealand with the Main Body. He was present at the Gallipoli landing on 25 April 1915 and on 27 April took part in halting the Turkish attack at Walker's Ridge. That evening he was shot in the thigh at close range. For his gallantry and leadership during this action he was mentioned in despatches and appointed a DSO. Hart was mentioned in despatches five times during WW1, awarded the French Croix de Guerre and made a CB. In early 1931 he was appointed as NZ administrator in Western Samoa. During WW2 he served in the 2NZEF Staff Office, Cairo.
