    Embroidered belt: London Xmas 1917, WW1

    Made by Lance Corporal Alton Clive Johns, Wellington infantry Regiment, NZEF, while recuperating at Southwark Hospital, London.

    Alton Clive Johns of Auckland served with the Wellington Infantry Regiment during WW1. His service was on the Western Front. In June 1917 he was wounded in the upper arm and after a period convalescing at the YMCA Scottish Chyurches Huts he returned to the front line. On 17th October he was again wounded, receiving multiple wounds to chest, arms and legs. On this occasion he was evacuated to England spending eight weeks at Southwark Hospital in London and was then transferred to No 1 New Zealand General Hospital, Brockenhurst on 8th January 1918.

    Post war AC Johns ran a radio manufacturing business in Auckland and for a period ran a private radio station. He also served on a number of community boards and was Mayor of Mt Eden from 1950-1959. His interests included sports and he was Captain of the first NZ Hockey Team, and became an Auckland tennis representative. He was awarded the Queen's Service Order (Companion) for his public service.
