  • Description

Paint box. Wooden paint box containing painting materials, made by George Rowney & Co. The box has a hinged lid and a drawer at the base. The fixtures are brass, including a key hole and an inset hinged handle in the front of the drawer. The underside of the lid is lined with blue felt, which is printed in gold with the maker's mark. This reads: "G. ROWNEY & Co., / Artists' Colourmen / 51, RATHBONE PLACE, LONDON."

The box has six compartments which contain paint materials. Two of the compartments have trays with folded ribbons at the sides, which lift out of the box and reveal more space beneath. The back-most compartment is a lift-out tray which contains 12 watercolour pigment cakes in the following colours: Prussian Blue, Raw Umber, Lake, Neutral, Light Red, Van Dyke, Indigo, Raw Sienna, Black, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Oker, and Burnt Umber. Beneath this tray is another lift-out tray which contains three graphite pencils.

There are four compartments in the middle row. The left-most compartment contains a brush-holder made of bone. The next compartment contains a lift-out tray, housing a bronze block and charcoal sticks in white, brown, and black wrapped in plastic. Underneath the lift-out tray are four more empty compartments. The next compartment contains a sponge in a glass container. The right-most compartment is empty.

The front most compartment contains three paintbrushes, one with no handle, two brass charcoal holders, and two leather-rolled sticks. There is also a plastic bag filled with paint fragments.

The drawer below the main body of the box contains a white porcelain paint palette, which is rectangular in shape.
