    Daily Southern Cross, 7 May 1869, p3

"Mr J Lander, assistant wharfinger, was engaged yesterday in manufacturing a couple of man-ropes to hang at the stairs at which his Royal Highness will land. The skill which he displayed in this occupation was one of the neatest displays of nautical genius which it is possible to conceive. He commenced by taking as groundwork a piece of ordinary inch Manila rope which he bound around with blue silk, making white tips, and plaiting a large Turk's-head knot at the end. the next process which it underwent was to have a quantity of red silk cord twisted in the grooves of the original cordage, and lastly it was trimmed with a quantity of narrow gold lace, by which time the rope was so completely transformed that it would defy the most scrutinising examination of the manufacturer to recognise it."
