lidded jar

human history
  • Description

Porcelain, copper and cobalt on-glaze with gold lustre over-glaze.

The jar is a traditional work from the Arita area, noted for the fine quality of its porcelain. The patterning results from layering rice-paper stained and painted with copper and cobalt sulphates onto the glaze. Lustre is added in a later, lower temperature firing.
