human history
  • Other Name

    Platter with Camel Design

  • Description

Platter. Large. Stoneware with iron (Tenmoku) glaze and coloured overglazes. Black and brown in colour, with decoration of a painted camel train moving in an anti-clockwise direction around the rim.

This large platter demonstrates highly skilled decorative techniques. Knowing that the varying thicknesses of the base glaze would produce black or brown colours, the artist painted on the camels using this anticipated variation in colour to represent the camels by day and by night. All was revealed only after the kiln firing.
