    Major Charles Heaphy, VC

    Born 1820 in London; joined The New Zealand Company as a Staff Surveyor and arrived in New Zealand aboard The Tory in 1840. Spent some time exploring parts of The South Island; 1860 surveyed route for Waikato Military road; 1863 joined Auckland Rifle Volunteers; also with Auckland Engineer Volunteers and later with The New Zealand Militia. Later to Australia and died in Brisbane in 1881.

    Military Service: Auckland Rifle Volunteers: joined No 2 Coy (10/1858-), Lieutenant No 6 Coy (29/6/1863-17/8/1863); Captain No 3 Company (18/8/1863-10/2/1864), Major (11/2/1864-)
