Matau

human history
  • Other Name

    Fish hook (English)

  • Description

Matau. One piece fish hook. This is a matau made of tifa (mother-of-pearl shell). The matau is coloured differently on either side. One side of the matau has a pearl lustre while the other side is coloured a dark grey. The matau has a smooth surface and a curved shape. The end of the matau is pointed while the opposite end is carved to create a lug. This matau is shaped differently to the traditional Tokelauan matau and pa taki aheu (fish hook/lure).

Therefore this matau may have been used as a form of adornment or as a collectible item.
