    suit, [cocktail], dress and jacket, [delustered silk satin], black, fully lined in black silk, dress: 'v' neck, darts and panels to front for shaping, zipper to centre back, upper gathered into centre front below point of 'v' and covered in beadwork which extends around neckline and down sides to waist level, knee length, jacket: three quarter sleeves, curved lower edges, [shawl] collar, self covered buttons, three pronged darts to front

    This chic cocktail suit was designed and made by Bruce Papas (b.1931), a notable high society Auckland designer.

    It is a beautiful example of the elegant tailoring, made famous internationally by Coco Chanel, which became fashionable in the late 1950s. The dress features delicate beadwork around the neckline and bodice, and is complemented by a stylish evening jacket.
