The Featherston prisoner of war camp was set up in September 1942 at the request of the US military. During 1942-43 868 prisoners of war were brought in, mainly captured on Guadalcanal. In the camp they were set to work in gardens and making furniture. Many also made small souvenir items that were given as presents or sold to make pocket money.
