A carved wooden handle or shaft with a singular shark's tooth lashed in a 'X' pattern with coconut sennit cord to the head. The lashing is threaded through two drilled holes in the tooth and two drilled holes in the wooden, handle's head. There is a third hole drilled into the tooth with no lashing through it. The handle terminates to a point at the butt. The shaft has an ovoid cross-section. The head of the handle is quadrangular in cross section. There is a matt black accretion and patina in patches throughout the wood possible from where the object was once covered with an adhered woven sheath as in other examples. The wood is of medium density and colour and is unpolished. " MICRONESIA | SHARK'S TOOTH IMPLEMENT | Nox34b." is handwritten in black ink on an adhered octagonal paper sticker on the shaft.WāhiMicronesia/PacificRā Tāpiringa1924Tohu Tuakiri Kē15862.2 (ethnology)X34b (Edge-Partington)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete implement, 15862.2, X34b, Photographed by Andrew Hales,… … Read more Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tāmaki Paenga Hira, 15862.2Takenga ā-AhureaMicronesianKohingaT W Leys MemorialKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiMicronesia/PacificRāPre 1924Tikanga Waihangacarved lashed drilled RolledWaitohu/māka[MICRONESIA]?
