  • Description

    Pulou. Hat. This is made up of two components: lau fā (pandanus leaf) and hibiscus leaf fibre. The pulou is a wide brimmed hat and measures at 995mm in diameter. The framework of the pulou is constructed by lalaga (weaving) together lau fā which is light brown in colour. The hibiscus fibres have been processed through synthetic dyes of several colours and are worked to create decorative patterns across the pulou.

    Repetitive motifs, of dark brown hibiscus fibre, align with the round edges of the brim. Encircling the side of the crown are triangular patterns in green colour, also showing signs of discoloration and fading. Further decorations of green and red hibiscus fibre atop the crown. Sections of dark discolorations present on the pulou. A block or mold, usually made of wood, is used to assist in the shaping of the pulou.
