Kie

human history
  • Other Name

    Fine mat, sample (English)

  • Description

Kie. Sample of a finely woven mat. This kie is woven in single check from processed strips of baan ni kaina into a wide rectangular shape. Its small size suggest this kie was produced as a demonstration or a sample of weaving technique. The fine strips of baan ni kaina are golden yellow and light brown in colour, each measuring 4.5mm in width.

In the initial preparation of the baan ni kaina, when the leaves are harvested as young green leaves, they produce the golden yellow colour. When harvested as old leaves, the processed strips are brown in colour. The two coloured types are woven into a pattern of diagonal stripes across the surface of this kie. The ends of the strips have been tied off along its long sides. At one corner edge the bann ni kaina has been woven into a loop attachment.
