Pulou. Hat. This pulou is made primarily of lau fā (pandanus leaf) that has not been dyed and is a natural light brown in colour. The lau fā has been cut into thin strips which have then been constructed using the lalaga (weaving) technique to form the body of the pulou beginning at the centerpoint of the crown and extending out and down to the papaki (brim).

Given the crown's rigid shape, it is probable that the maker used an ulu niu (hat block) at the beginning of the weaving process, so that the centrepoint would remain fixed and the crown, perfectly shaped. The sides of the crown differ from the top of the crown and the rest of the pulou in the way that they have been woven. Unlike the rest of the pulou, an open-style of weaving which resembles latticework has been used, creating an interlaced structure with diamond-shaped openings. The hele pulou (hat band) which encircles the base of the crown is also made from strips of lau fā that have been woven or braided to form a tubular cord. This rope-like cord runs around the circumference of the crown and loops itself at intervals of 90mm to create a decorative pattern. The loops have been fastened to the sides of the crown with twine made from plastic bags. At base of the crown, sitting on the papaki and attached to the hele pulou is a fakamanaia (decoration) made of three rosettes indicating the front of the pulou. These rosettes are also made from lau fā but include dyed black strips interwoven with the natural light brown ones. To one side of the rosettes tucked beneath them and attached to the hele pulou is a large plastic bead made to resemble a type of red/black seed or berry. The pulou would have been worn on special occasions and for celebrations.
