Kato pelesetiki kavei

human history
  • Other Name

    Shoulder bag, plastic (English)

  • Description

Kato pelesetiki kavei. Shoulder bag made of plastic. It has been woven from pelesetiki (plastic packing straps) used for securing parcels. This bag is made up from red and black pelesetiki. The bag itself is rectangular in shape with an open cavity at the top. The edges surrounding the opening are portrayed through a serrated woven finish. The weave that makes up the entirety of the bag shows a chevron-like pattern that is defined by both red and black colours.

An external component made of the same material has been used to fashion a kavei (handle, bag strap) that is long enough to indicate that this bag would be worn over the shoulder. The kavei is long with a circular cross-section and shows a diagonal checkered mata pelē (pattern) that is defined by the red and black colour ways. There are no closures on the bag. This bag was acquired from the Pasifika Arts Festival in March 2001. It was made by Eleni Tamatoa.
