Private Burr was later killed in action near Florence, 2nd August 1944. Tripoli was captured by the 8th Army under General Montgomery on 23rd January 1943. As part of the 8th Army the New Zealand 5 Brigade, including the 21st Infantry Battalion, were posted to guard duties in Tripoli. 22256 Private John Hosking Burr was the son of Henry Ernest and Eliza Josephine Burr, of Auckland, New Zealand. At the time of his enlistment he was employed with the Post and Telegraph Department Exchange Operator, and living at Kaipara Flats.He served in the Middle East and in Italy. Private Burr was aged 36 when he was killed in action on the 2nd August 1944 and is buried at the Florence War Cemetery, Italy.
