Red Ensign used at Stanley POW Camp during WW2

Made by an inmate of Stanley POW Camp, Hong Kong. Successfully hidden from Japanese until hoisted on the flagstaff on the day Japanese occupancy ended. Brought back to NZ by another internee Stuart Taylor Williamson, shipowner and founder of the Williamson Shipping Line, Hong Kong. Williamson was also Official Agent to the NZ Government. and during WW2 was interned at Stanley Camp. On his release he provided New Zealand and British authorities with the official report of conditions in the camp. Given to the Museum by his sister Miss MT Williamson. The Williamson's were originally an Auckland family and in 1968 their original home was still standing in St Stephens Ave Parnell.
