    markings: inscription on blade- :2ND WEST YORK (HALLAMSHIRE) RIFLE VOLUNTEERS / PRESENTED TO CAPTAIN FREDERICK THORPE MAPPIN / BY THE NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICERS & MEMBERS OF HIS / COMPANY AS A TOKEN OF THEIR RESPECT AND ESTEEM / MARCH 1864
