Religion should our thoughts engage... embroidered sampler, 1812

  • Description

    Empbroidered sampler, England, 1812

Sampler worked by Mary Greenwood, aged 11 years, 1811-1812.

sampler with large turreted building ( Soloman's Temple), border, verse, floral motifs motifs, signature and date.

signed along bottom edge: "Mary Greenwood. Aged 11. January 2 1812"

verse: "Religion should our thoughts engage, / Amidst our youthful bloom./ 'Twill fit us for declining age / And for the awful tomb."

Mary Greenwood's sampler shows a large building which may have been her depiction of a building about which she was familiar. The absence of alphabets and numerals, combined with the decorative nature of the design suggest that this was not the stitcher's first sampler.
