  • Other Name

    Comb (English)

  • Description

Selu. Comb. Selu is the general name for comb, this selu is referred to as a selu la'au (wooden comb). Selu are primarily used as hair adornments to be worn by female but can also be worn by male. Made of wood, this selu is dark brown in colour and flat and thin in depth. Made to be used vertically, this selu has a lower half made up of sixteen rows of teeth that are cylindrical in shape and taper to a point.

This end is used to insert into the hair and would hold it in place. The top half of this selu is decoratively carved into to two separated but symmetrical points which would be the focal point when worn. There is a row of patterns and motifs carved on the front and back of the selu, directly above where the teeth begin. On one side, the space above is left undecorated but on the other side it is carved with curved lines and triangles.
