    Three sports caps associated with Major William Arthur Gray, MC

    Caps of Auckland Grammar School, Auckland Football Rugby Union and Varisty Rugby Union.

    Arthur Gray attended Auckland Grammar School (approx. 1904 - 1908) where he rose to captain the school's rugby first fifteen; he then enrolled at Auckland University College, completing his studies with a MSc Mathematics (Honours) in 1911.

    William Gray of Auckland studied engineering at Auckland University and was a keen rugby player. After leaving university he was employed as a Civil Engineer. Following the outbreak of WW1 Gray enlisted with the 3rd Battalion New Zealand Rifle Brigade and embarked from Wellington on 5 February 1916.

    He was awarded the Military Cross in 1917 while serving on the Western Front. He subsequently became a prisoner of war and was not released until 1919.

    “For conspicuous gallantry in action. He assumed command of and led his company with great courage and determination, capturing the position with great courage and reorganizing his line. He set a splendid example to his men.”
