Te ili

human history
  • Other Name

    Fan (English)

  • Description

Ili. Fan. This is an ili made of tuaaniu (coconut midrib), laukie (soft pandanus), kaumoe (immature coconut leaf) and fulu moa (chicken feathers). The tuaaniu are braided to form the spine of the blade as well as the handle. The handle is then encased in lalaga (woven) laukie. A beige laukie and a purple laukie are used to form a checkerboard pattern along the handle. The circular blade is made of tuaaniu tightly lashed using thin strips of kaumoe.

A dyed dark green laukie and a light green laukie are used to form a decorative line around the blade. Fulu moa are threaded around the edge of the ili to serve as another distinguishing feature. The use of white as well as black feathers, of varying sizes creates an eye-catching contrast. As in many parts of the Pacific, ili were used to keep cool in the hot weather and presented as gifts to visitors.
