This is an ili made of tuaaniu (coconut midrib), kaumoe (immature coconut leaf), laukie (soft pandanus) and fulu kaleva (kaleva feathers). Tuaaniu are braided to form the spine of the blade as well as the handle. The cylindrical handle is then encased in lalaga (woven) laukie. A beige laukie and a black laukie are lalaga to form a checkerboard pattern along the handle. The blade is circular in shape and is made of tightly lashed tuaaniu. Thin strips of kaumoe are used to lash the tuaaniu. Decorative borders are threaded along the blade using purple, green and orange laukie. A row of fulu kaleva borders the ili as another form of decoration. As in many parts of the Pacific, ili were used to keep cool in the hot weather and were often presented as gifts.WāhiUnknownTohu Tuakiri Kē2011.x.556 (temporary accession number)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Te ili, 2011.x.556, Cultural Permissions Apply Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tāmaki Paenga Hira, 2011.x.556Takenga ā-AhureaunknownKaiwaihanga Matua unknownWāhiUnknownRāUnknownTikanga Waihangawoven lashedPāohopandanus (leaf)/leaf (plant material)/plant materialcoconut (fibre)/plant fibre/natural fibre/fibre[feather]/animal materialRaraunga Ine300mm210mm35mmHuinga KaupapaFibrework/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Featherwork/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūFanPersonal Assistive ArtefactsPersonal GearPersonal ArtefactsWhakahounga o Mua06 Oct 2023 Tūemi e whai hononga Ngā hua o DigitalNZ Page 16 Advertisements Column 3 (Evening Post, 05 May 1906) National Library of New Zealand Page 1 Advertisements Column 4 (Feilding Star, 07 May 1892) National Library of New Zealand Page 4 Advertisements Column 2 (Inangahua Times, 11 October 1898) National Library of New Zealand ACCIDENT TO COUNCILLOR CROWTHER.
