Te ili

human history
  • Other Name

    Fan (English)

  • Description

Ili. Fan. This is an ili made of tuaaniu (coconut midrib), laukie (soft pandanus), kaumoe (immature coconut leaf) and feathers. Tuaaniu has been braided to form the spine of the blade as well as the handle. The handle is cylindrical in shape and encased in lalaga (woven) laukie. A beige coloured laukie, and a black laukie are used to form a checker board pattern along the handle. The handle then flares to a circular blade made of tightly lashed tuaaniu.

The tuaaniu are lashed with thin strips of kaumoe. A beige coloured laukie and an orange coloured laukie are lalaga through the blade to form decorative motifs. A row of fulu kaleva are threaded around the edge of the blade and serve as another decorative feature. As in many parts of the Pacific, ili are used to keep cool in the hot weather and are often presented as gifts to visitors.
