Te rabatan te matau

human history
  • Other Name

    Fish lure shank (English)

  • Description

Te rabatan te matau. Shank. Made from te bwaeo (mother of pearl shell) and cut from the hinged area. This is one part of te matau (fish hook). It has been cut into a length with a short width. The depth of te bwaeo can be seen from the sides and the way in which the hinge is raised. Two small circular perforations have been drilled into the side of the hinge segment where it has been filed and tapered into a short point. This would be for the purpose of te ao (line).

Opposite, te rabatan te matau becomes more flat and spatulate in shape with a straight edge. Normally a pair of furrows would be filed out across the sides, however this one remains unfinished. This section would be where tabon te matau (point) would be lashed to with some kind of cord, in most cases the use of kora (coconut sennit fibre cordage). The presence of filed furrows would assist in positioning the cordage. Te bwaeo is off-white in colour with some shimmer on both sides. The spatulate end shows a small section of dark brown colouring. Some transparency can be seen along its depth with fragmentation across the exterior.
