  • Description

Te bwara te tarawa. Fishermen's hat. This is a hat made of te ira (pandanus leaf), a light green cotton thread and black plastic coated thread. It is formed like a circular pyramid. The exterior is made up of wide pinnules of te ira in alternate colours of fluroesent pink and a pale natural yellow colour. These have been tacked down with the light green cotton thread to a plain woven interior of te ira.

A strip of te ira in a pale natural yellow colour has been used to frame the rim. The black plastic coated thread has been used to fasten this with a blanket-stitch finish. Internally a band has been woven with te ira and attached mid-way into the bwara te tarawa. This part would assist in fastening it to the wearers head. This style of hat would be worn on a fishing excursion, is considered a modern style as a resultof the colour and recycled light green thread which is commonly found on rice sacks imported to Kiribati.
