    4/429 Lieutenant Sydney William Paine, New Zealand Field Engineers, 1NZEF, WW1

    Aucklander Sydney Paine enlisted with the New Zealand Engineers as a Lance Corporal with No 1 Troop and left New Zealand with the Main Body on 14 October 1914. He served on Gallipoli and was killed in action at Quinn's Post on 9 May 1915. and is buried at Quinn's Post Cemetery (C.3)

    Before his enlistment Sydney worked as an engineer with the firm Stone and White (Wakefield Street, Auckland). He had been associated with the Field Engineers (Volunteers and Territorials) for eight years and received a commission with No 8 Company (Auckland) in 1911.

    Sydney Paine attended Mt Eden Primary School and Auckland Grammar School and his death is commemorated at both schools.
