    Cap tally, Kreuzer Emden

During 1914 the German cruiser SMS Emden successfully raided allied shipping in the Indian Ocean until run aground by HMAS Sydney during the Battle of Cocos. Many souvenirs were produced following the destruction of the vessel and cap tallies became collectable

Following the destruction of the Emden four other German warships have carried the same name, and in Germany Emden 'caps' were worn as a symbol of patriotism, while the vessel itself was awarded the Iron Cross by Kaiser Wilhem II.
