Hat, part of uniform, Voluntary Aid Detachment, New Zealand Red Cross, WW2

Worn by Mrs Williams, Commandant of St Heliers Detachment

A Commandant’s Office was to train the Red Cross Members of her detachment in home nursing and First Aid; preparing them for examinations.

When necessary Auckland and Wellington Public Hospitals and the National Women’s, were staffed, and help organised in the Evelyn Firth Home for returned soldiers - now the White Heron.

Commandants were elected by the Detachment - which was divided into sections of about 6 members - a Section Leader being responsible to the Commandant.

This was all in preparation for service in the St Heliers Area, should some disaster or other emergency circumstance call for it.

The service ribbon on the uniform recognises this member’s service of 3 years nursing in the Air Force Medical Service.
