    Belonged to Charles Hugh Lushington, later of New Zealand.

    helmet: dark blue helmet with badge of Fermanagh Light Infantry

    Home pattern helmet: blue cloth over cork; four seams; front peak bound with metal, back peak with patent leather; cloth band; curb chain chin-strap with rose fastenings on sides of helmet; spike mounted on cross-piece base with four ventilation holes; convex bar from crown to bottom of back peak

    lining: green undersides of peaks; tan leather head band; red cloth with tie threaded through

    badge: eight-pointed star with crown above; on star a laurel wreath around circular band with FERMANAGH / LIGHT INFANTRY; at centre a castle; base scroll with motto UT PROAVI (based on crest andLatin motto of Enniskillen: Ut proavi in Deo confidemus)

    Helmet, Fermanagh Light Infantry, circa 1880

    Belonged to Charles Hugh Lushington, later of New Zealand

    Charles Hugh Lushington (27.1.1862-1907). Son of Charles Hugh Lushington of Rodersham Lodge, Kent, England. Spent much of his childhood in India where his father was a judge with the East India Civil Service. Educated at Eton and Cheam.

    Charles arrived in New Zealand in 1882 and joined the Styak family at Greenmount East Tamaki as a farm cadet, and on 6 May 1884 married Sarah Jane Styak, and continued to live at Greenmount until 1886 when the family bought Rodersham, a lime cement house at Mahurangi Heads.

    It appears that Charles Lushington served briefly with the Fermanagh Light Infantry before coming to New Zealand. The Ulster Counties Directory, 1880 lists a Lieutenant CH Lushington as a member of this militia regiment, It is possible that he had joined an older sister who had married Francis John Graham of Drumgoon, County Fermanagh and Ballinakill Lodge, County Galway.
