Hoe

human history
  • Other Name

    Paddle (English)

  • Description

Hoe. Carved ceremonial paddle. This hoe (paddle) is carved from ra'au (hardwood) into a leaf-shaped rapa (paddle blade) with a long slender handle, round in section, that flares toward the butt. The butt is carved into ten stylised ti'i (ancestral human figures) arranged concentrically, leaving a cavity in the interior of the butt and a short length of metal wire tied inside it.

There is very fine geometric carving across each side of the blade in a serrated lattice effect, and further geometric patterns carved over all the surfaces of the hoe. The hoe is dark brown in colour with some patina visible.
