head, zoomorphic

human history
  • Kupu whakaahua

Animal head, intact, possibly of an agouti, opossum or squirrel-like creature with a short snout. Small ears, eyes highlighted by a brow line of red paint. The mouth also has red paint in the outlines and a little on the neck. Small remnants of yellowish pigment on the neck. The whole head has had a white coating, much of which remains. On the area around the nose and mouth are impressions of a textile made while the clay was damp, and working scrape marks on the neck.

Mould made. Possibly broken at the neck or intentionally finished as is.
