saddlery

human history
  • Other Name

    spur (type)

  • Description

    saddlery - probably WW1 period

spur: single spur, with swan neck and toothed rowel and boot fitting

"181 Piccadilly London" is inscribed on the boot fitting inset. This suggests that the spur was bought from/produced by Fortnum & Mason (a store which was at that address since 1707 and continues through to present day). However, Fortnum & Mason predominantly sold luxury goods, especially groceries. It is unclear whether they would have stocked saddlery/tack.
