shotgun, double barrel

human history
  • Description

    12-gauge double barrel shotgun

    Made by Colonial Ammunition Company gunsmith, Charlie Saunders.

    Made for Major John Whitney's daughter Alice. A unique piece, a 'skeet' gun.

    It was later passed on to Grey Whitney, when he was 14 years old, circa 1938 and subsequently to Grey's son Kenneth.

    It was modified for Kenneth by having the stock extended.

    It takes lead shot and can no longer be used because of legislation that prohibits the firing of lead shot over waterways.

    other features:

    has "snap caps" in barrels, these take pressure and help maintain the gun;

    gold escutcheon - unmarked

    markings: MADE BY COLONIAL AMMUNITION CO. LTD. / AUCKLAND N.Z.
