    smoothbore percussion carbine, .577 inch calibre; 2 barrel bands; with bayonet boss; with ramrod; with bayonet; split in forend wood right hand side near forward barrel band; repair to outer striker face of hammer

    missing: foresight blade; forward sling swivel broken off from base

    markings:

    London proof and view marks left rear of barrel

    on lock: CHARLES LANCASTER / LONDON

    on rear top of barrel: LANCASTER PATENT

    on butt tang: VF / [broad arrow] / 1270

    serial number on bayonet boss and barrel under stock: 1270

    on butt: initials W / GM inside diamond; stamped twice; possibly a colonial marking

    manufacturer: Charles Lancaster, London, circa 1856 - 1860s
