    Snider conversion 1st Model Infantry rifle, 1868

    Belonged to William G Wray

    Civil Contract Model

    Snider long rifle; 3 barrel bands, possibly reassembled on wrong side, screwhead normally found on left; converted from 1853 Enfield; .577 inch calibre; brass trigger guard, lock washers, butt plate, and forend cap; no provision for nipple protector and chain; appears to be a civilian model, but has Tower marked lock with [crown], and no usual government ownership markings, possibly made up from leftover parts from a military contract as the local gun trade were authorised to Snider's Patent breech

    missing parts: screw from hammer; spur of hammer; breech block pin screw; clearing rod; rear sling swivel on forward of trigger guard; chip to left rear of hammer face

    at rear of lock plate: [crown]

    on rear sight bed, left hand side, and on underside base of rear sight: 4

    under breech block: B / 5

    on top of breech block: S with arrow through it

    on left rear of breech block: SNIDER'S / PATENT

    carved on top of butt forward of butt tang: ANDREW WH

    owners initials marked on stock, possible on inside of lock plate: WW
