    History

Stated by donor to have been captured by his father John Shaw, Waikato Militia, from a Maori during fighting near Tauranga.

"Belonged to a British Officer of the 1st Div. to land at Tauranga (1860) - the Maoris cut them up and drove them well back… a second division landed they were also repelled, a 3rd was sent, fortunately they beat them and drove the Maoris away fleeing to the Waikato. Waikato at this stage the militia was called up comprising all the settlers. During the Waikato struggle my father as leader through a dense bush a cap snapped, looking up the puriri tree a big Maori aimed the gun, my father drew his revolver killed him, he fell to the ground, my father picked the gun up & he thought it a wonderful gun that he took it to headquarters saying that he would like to buy it, as he got it for 12 pounds and used it throughout the Waikato struggle between 1860 & 1865, This gun has been in our family of 16 at last handed down to me some 50 years ago (donor's letter)
