poising calipers

human history
  • Description

    Poising tool, plier type

brass and steel tool. Spring between handles, Disc at joint. Brass arms with steel points facing each other. Screw through left-hand arm controlling distance between arms. Screw on right-hand arm holding steel plate in place. Marked on left-hand handle "DL P.P" with a star and a crescent moon.

Poising tool, when a new balance staff (the axle of the balance wheel which often broke when the watch was dropped) was fitted, the balance wheel had to be poised, which meant finding its heaviest and lightest parts, in order to add or remove weight to get it "balanced". The balance pivots are mounted between hollow points of this tool, allowing the balance to roll until the heaviest part was at the bottom.
