Kato posi

human history
  • Other Name

    Boat basket (English)

  • Description

Kato posi. Boat basket. This is a hand woven kato. It has been made from lau niu (coconut leaf), lau fā (pandanus leaf), synthetic plastic tape and a kāniu (coconut midribs) used for the tia (coiling technique). It portrays an oval rim that has been finished with pale off-white pinnules of lau fā forming a flat and looped braid around the entirety of the rim. Seven layers of coiling have been knotted and encased with imported synthetic plastic tape.

Triangular patterns are defined by the use of black, mid brown and light brown imported synthetic tape over the coiling. The remaining depth of the kato has been joined separately and is shaped like the hull of a canoe. It has been made from different brown shades of lau fā. A separate layer of woven lau niu lines the interior of the hull shaped base. Two hui moa (handles) made from pale, off-white and dark brown lau fā have been attached and finished from the exterior of the basket. A mix of brown, blue and pale off-white coloured lau fā has been used to encase the ends upon the exterior of the kato.
