By 1913 he was living in New Zealand and tended horses of the Special Constables camped in the Auckland Domain during the 1913 Waterfront Strike, probably as an employee of the Department of Agriculture. During WW1 he enlisted as a Captain in the New Zealand Veterinary Corps (Service no 13/637) embarking with the Main Body. He served as an official veterinarian in the 1NZEF in France & Egypt. On 29 August 1915, while in Egypt, he married Mabel Deane.
