'Ula fala

human history
  • Other Name

    'Ula fala (Samoan)

    Necklace of pandanus keys (English)

  • Description

'Ula fala. Necklace of pandanus keys. This 'ula (necklace) is made from the fruit keys of the fala tree (pandanus tree). The keys naturally range in colour from yellow to red, however they are now painted a deep red. Eighty fala keys were used to create this 'ula and each are threaded with a clear nylon string. With no fastening mechanism the nylon string has simply knotted to held the 'ula together.

This 'ula fala was painted a bright red after it was threaded together making the once clear nylon a red colour. Traditionally this type of 'ula was primarily worn by tulafale (orator) but are now worn by any persons of status.
