13585 Sapper George Wynne embarked with the 13th Reinforcements Divisional Signalling Company on 27 May 1916, en route to England. He served with the NZ Engineers Signals Division in France and had two periods of hospitalisation; several months in 1916-1917 suffering from bronchitis, and suspected TB, and in December 1917 was again evacuated from France and spent nearly nine months in hospital suffering from a gastric ulcer before returning to New Zealand aboard the HS Maheno in late August 1918.
